So there I was, walking through the halls of Winslow, book bag over my shoulder and ‘clothing’ layer shifted into long, baggy sweatshirt and jeans, glasses perched on my face - which I didn’t actually need anymore. That was the entire point of a secret identity. Sudden changes in personality and action, right as some strange new cape makes their big debut? While I doubted that anyone would be monitoring Winslow’s student population all that closely - and I doubted if Emma was smart enough to figure it out on her own - I may as well be cautious. Mix that with the fact that now I could begin operation ‘Tear down Emma’s, Madson’s and Sophia’s tiny little worlds around their ears’ - plan names are hard, okay? - in earnest, and it was all I could do to keep a wide grin off my face as I walked through the main doors of the school.įor the time being I had to keep acting like I was still, well, normal. On the plus side, now that my friends were no longer in my head and I’d spent an entire weekend connecting with them, and re-connecting with Dad, I was feeling better on that trip to Winslow High than I had in years. No-one showed up for the hour we stayed afterwards doing a few final checks of things at the very least - I had school in the morning, which meant having to endure the endless pettiness of my three principal tormentors.
As Dad had reminded me after the impromptu little concert last night - which thankfully I don’t believe anyone heard.
Regrettably, I couldn’t go spending all of my time with my friends at the old theatre as they, in their own words, ‘made the place more home-y’.
